Legendary Figures

Dick Turpin

Yorkshire

The highwayman hanged at York in 1739 whose ghost — or the ghost of his horse Black Bess — is said to ride the old coach roads of Yorkshire still. The real Turpin was a brutal criminal; legend transformed him into a dashing folk hero, one of the great reinventions in British popular mythology.
