A great caterpillar-like spirit said to guard gooseberry bushes on the Isle of Wight, keeping children from stealing fruit before it was ripe. Her name alone was enough to keep small hands away from the patch — whether she was real or merely a parents' invention, the gooseberries remained unmolested.
