Macha is an Irish sovereignty goddess associated with Emain Macha, now Navan Fort. In the Ulster Cycle she is forced to race the king's horses while pregnant; after winning and giving birth to twins, she curses the men of Ulster to suffer the pains of childbirth in their hour of greatest need.
