Njuggle

Shetland, Scotland

The njuggle (also nuggle, neugle, or shoopiltee) is a shapeshifting water spirit unique to Shetland folklore, most often appearing as a grey horse to lure riders into lochs and rivers. Unlike the malicious Scottish kelpie or the terrifying each-uisge, the Shetland njuggle is described as mischievous rather than murderous — more prone to pranks than killings — though it can still drown the unwary. A distinctive identifying feature is its curling, wheel-like tail, and its habit of haunting watermills. Etymologically, the name derives from Old Norse nykr (water demon), reflecting Shetland's deep Norse heritage. One well-known tale describes a blacksmith who must outwit the njuggle to reclaim his horse.
