Renwick Cockatrice
Cumbria
When workmen demolished the old church at Renwick in 1733, a great winged creature flew out from the foundations — a cockatrice hatched from the ancient stonework. John Tallantire beat it to death with a branch of rowan, the only wood proof against its deadly gaze. The church was rebuilt, but the rowan was kept.
