Tehi Tegi
Isle of Man
In Manx folklore, Tehi Tegi ('Fair Chooser') was a supernatural enchantress who appeared on the Isle of Man as the most beautiful woman ever seen. Men from all corners of the island became enslaved to her beauty, neglecting homes and work until the island fell into ruin. She eventually led her followers to a river; when they waded after her, the spell broke and the waters swallowed them. In Sophia Morrison's Manx Fairy Tales (1911) she transformed afterwards into a bat; in other versions she was banished from the island by the sea-god Manannán and condemned to return each year in the form of a wren — linking her directly to the ancient Manx tradition of the Hunt the Wren ceremony on St Stephen's Day.
