White Lady of Tattershall Castle
Tattershall Castle, the great brick tower-house built for Ralph Cromwell in the fifteenth century, is said to be haunted by a 'White Lady' — a glimmering figure in a flowing white gown and a French-style medieval headdress, seen wandering the battlements and the castle's private chamber. No record survives of who she might have been; tradition holds only that she walks in search of a lost love who never comes.
Visitors and staff over the years have reported more than just the apparition itself: unexplained taps and bangs echo through the floors, disembodied voices seem to murmur in empty rooms, and leaflets in a turret room have reportedly been found scattered about after the castle was locked for the night.
Now in the care of the National Trust, Tattershall Castle leans into its reputation each Halloween with ghost-story evenings — though the White Lady herself is said to need no special occasion, having reputedly paced the ramparts on quiet nights for centuries.
