Devil's Dyke

Sussex

The great dry valley carved through the South Downs above Brighton was dug by the Devil in a single night, his intent being to flood the Weald and drown the Sussex churches. A woman's candle and a crowing cock tricked him into thinking dawn had broken, and he fled with the work unfinished. The dyke stands as testament to his thwarted design.
