Croagh Patrick

County Mayo, Ireland

Ireland's holy mountain, where Saint Patrick fasted for forty days and drove the serpents from Ireland. Before Patrick, it was the sacred mountain of the god Lugh, and his festival Lughnasadh was celebrated on its summit. Pilgrims still climb it barefoot on the last Sunday of July, as they have for three thousand years.
