Devil's Bit Mountain
County Tipperary, Ireland
Devil's Bit Mountain (Bearnán Éile) is a prominent hill in County Tipperary, Ireland, featuring a striking gap in its ridge. According to legend, the Devil was crossing Ireland when he bit a chunk from the mountain — breaking his teeth on the hard rock — and spat the piece southwards: that flying boulder became the Rock of Cashel, the legendary seat of the Kings of Munster. Variants of the story describe a chase involving Fionn mac Cumhaill or a confrontation with a bishop. The legend is attested in 17th-century sources and in the duchas.ie Schools' Collection (collected 1937–38). The geographical alignment between the missing chunk and the Rock of Cashel is strikingly plausible and clearly inspired the tradition.
