
The millennia before written record in Britain and Ireland, from the first hunter-gatherers after the last Ice Age through the Neolithic farmers who raised the great stone monuments. No contemporary text survives from this era, so any folklore tied to it — the standing stones, barrows and hillforts still visible in the landscape — was necessarily invented long afterwards to explain features whose original purpose had been forgotten.
