Sub-Roman Britain

The two centuries or so after Roman withdrawal, before Anglo-Saxon kingdoms were firmly established — a poorly documented era from which the Arthurian legend is traditionally supposed to spring. Written sources are scarce and often written centuries later, so this period is unusually thick with legend built on very little solid historical record.
